Gwinnett Could be Getting HOT…

Almost everyone is familiar with the HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes on I-85. They have been in operation for several years, and run all of the way from downtown Atlanta to the area of Old Peachtree Rd in Gwinnett County.
The difference between the current HOV lanes and the proposed HOT lanes is two-fold. Under the current rules, vehicles with two or more occupants, motorcycles, van pools, transit vehicles and AFVs (Alternative Fuel Vehicles.. with AFV plates) can use the HOV lanes.
The two major differences in the proposal would be that instead of two occupants qualifying for usage of the High Occupancy lane, there would be a requirement for three occupants. In addition, single and two person vehicles could choose to pay a toll and use the HOT lane. Other vehicles, as listed above would still be able to use the HOT lanes without charge.
The toll would be “Dynamic”, meaning the the cost would vary depending on the level of usage. The goal would be to maintain an advantage for the HOT lane so that traffic in that lane would move more quickly.
Here is a description for the GaDOT (pdf).
