Gwinnett County Parks #1!
July 13th, 2009 Categories: Lilburn, Things to do
Did you know that? I keep seeing it on a couple of Parks’ signs that are near me in Lilburn. Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation named #1 in the USA. But it hadn’t really sunk into me…
So I decided to check it out. I had NO clue of the level of commitment that Gwinnett had to its parks. There are so many more facilities than the ones I was aware of… and having lived in several parts of Gwinnett in my 20 years here, I have been aware of a lot of the parks.
There are about 43 different locations with hundreds of facilities that are currently in the system, with 6 more on the planning board. The facilities range from aquatics centers to skateboard parks, and from walking trails to mountain bike trails.
Here is the 10 minute video about Gwinnett County’s commitment to its parks program. (Windows Media link, plays on your computer)
In addition to the County’s website, there is also GwinnettParkLife.com, the unofficial source about park activities in Gwinnett County.
One of the things that I think is the most exciting is the move to connect some of the parks through a network of greenways. These would be walking and biking trails that would spiderweb all over the county to allow one to walk, run or bike between different venues. Lilburn is also doing this for parks within its area. Currently, the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center is connected to a couple of other systems and more are in construction and planning.
